Free economic zone in Klaipeda
Free economic zone in Klaipeda is located near a large ice-free port, and the shipping lines go through it to different ports of South-East Asia, America and Western Europe.
Klaipeda FEZ is considered the most technologically equipped and meets all the European Union standards. This area was awarded “European Business Award 2012″ among 15,000 other leading European companies in the category of environmental protection.
1500 employees work in Klaipeda’s FEZ and additional 5000 jobs have been created in Lithuania thanks to the collaboration with companies of FEZ in Klaipeda. Total investment since the creation of the zone was 459 million euro, the turnover of the companies operating in the FEZ in the end of 2012 was 3 billion litas, while exports accounted 80% of this amount. Export of Klaipeda’s FEZ forms 5.2% of total exports of Lithuania, or 2.8% of GDP.
There are 17 companies operating in this zone, the establishment of another 6 companies is planned in the nearest future. The main investors are companies from England, Ireland, Thailand, Finland, Denmark, Japan, Norway, Switzerland, Belarus, Ukraine and Lithuania. Large foreign companies, such as Philip Morris Lietuva, the Danish fish processing enterprise A. Esperesen A / S, an Irish-Danish joint venture «Klaipedos verslo parkas», Yazaki Wiring Lietuva and others are operating here.
The main activities of the enterprises in FEZ in Klaipeda are: production and export of biodiesel, plastics, semi-finished plastic, metal products, transportation and storage services, fish processing, etc. In the end of 2012 UAB Heidelberg Cement Klaipeda began its activity, and UAB Fortum Klaipeda finished construction work on the creation of combined heat and power plant and started to produce electricity and heat. UAB Vesvela began construction of fish processing plant.
Potential investors in Klaipeda’s FEZ are investors from Norway, the USA, Russia, Finland, Denmark, China, Germany, Sweden, Azerbaijan, Belarus, and Lithuania.
