New list of scarce highly qualified professions in Lithuania

On August 30, the Government of the Republic of Lithuania updated the list of professions requiring high professional qualifications and shortages in the Republic of Lithuania. This order entered into force in 2019. September 1

The list includes professions related to technologies and developments of various industries, mechanics, automation, information technology, computer systems, programming and so on. These professions were included in the list of 40 professions approved at the end of 2018, but they are more diverse on this year’s list. The new list includes 55 professions, of which about 30 are new. These include an aviation worker, an electrician electrician, an automation and electrical engineer, a print worker, a sewing technologist, a woodworking technologist and an engineer, an aircraft mechanic, and an avionics specialist.

In the first half of 2019, the professions of marine electrical engineering were replaced by the professions of mechanics of marine equipment, marine engines and power plants and shipbuilding.

As many as 21 professions needed in Lithuania are related to computer technology, programming, media and so on. The previous list has been supplemented by such professions as computer engineer, computer database analyst, web services developer, graphic designer, information technology consultant for business.

The qualifications listed above, as well as other professions, must be confirmed by a diploma of higher education or professional experience of at least five years, which is required for a particular profession or industry. Information on the high professional qualifications of the foreigner and the profession or industry in which work is to be carried out must be indicated in the mediation letter of the employer to issue or replace a temporary residence permit.

A foreigner who wishes to work in Lithuania and meets the requirements of a highly qualified employee must obtain a temporary residence permit in the Republic of Lithuania before employment. A temporary residence permit for such a foreign worker is issued or replaced for a period of three years. If an employment contract is concluded for a period of less than three years, a temporary residence permit will be issued for the duration of the employment contract with an extension of three months.
