In August, about 550 more people came to Lithuania than left the country. This was announced on Monday by the Department of Statistics. According to him, more than 4.7 thousand people immigrated to Lithuania in August, including about 3 thousand citizens of Lithuania.
In the last month of summer, almost 4.2 thousand people left the country, of which the number of Lithuanian citizens is almost 3.7 thousand person.
According to experts, the increase in the number of arrivals is mainly due to the growth of personal income and the exit of Great Britain from the European Union.
According to Romo Lazutka, professor of economics at Vilnius University, salaries in Lithuania are more attractive to citizens of other countries, such as Ukraine, for example.
According to him, rising incomes have attracted Lithuanians, especially those who have “nowhere to go” after Brexit.
“The separation of the United Kingdom could change its economic situation. If the economy is falling, then unemployment is rising, which is probably the worst thing for Lithuanians living in England, ”the economist told BNS.
The large number of emigrants in August is due to the fact that some Lithuanians return home abroad in the fall, having spent the summer in Lithuania, and young people are leaving to study. Statistically positive migration trends were recorded for all months of this year, except for January.
This year, more than 33 thousand people immigrated to Lithuania. Almost 26.5 thousand people left the country.
