July is a record month in terms of immigration to Lithuania
Some statistics on migration in recent months in the Republic of Lithuania:
In July, more people came to Lithuania than in the previous month, positive migration trends are observed. According to data provided by the BNS Department of Statistics, 5,211 people arrived in Lithuania in July, and 3,507 emigrated.
According to experts, the increase in the number of arriving people is mainly due to income growth, but growing immigration from third countries may create some social problems in the future.
Almost 64% in July, new arrivals are Lithuanian citizens, and over 83% have Lithuanian citizenship. Statistically positive migration trends were recorded for all months of this year, except for January.
In total, 28,350 people immigrated to Lithuania this year, and 22,289 people left the country.
Most foreigners come to Lithuania from Ukraine. Zygimantas Mauricas, Luminor’s chief economist, said that the opportunity for Lithuanian employers to pay less to third-country migrants could hinder wage growth and technological progress. According to him, this could increase the unemployment rate among Lithuanians, social exclusion and tension. “This can happen if the flow from Ukraine or third countries gets out of control,” the economist told BNS.
According to the expert, with an increase in the population, a problem may arise with the adaptation of urban infrastructure to them. Last year, Lithuania lost 3.3 thousand people due to migration.
